So long, sweet summer

And hello, abundant autumn!

People often assume that I'm busy in the summer - because that's when flowers grow! And I am, but not in the way they might expect. "Everyday" flower sales shift during the summer. While there are still a handful of birthdays, anniversaries, sympathies, and celebratory events, folks are also on vacation, enjoying their own gardens, and grabbing flowers from farmstands and farmer's markets (which, as an advocate for locally-grown, I totally endorse)...

So I allocate my energies accordingly. I maintain my own cutting garden, along with relationships with other growers nearby, so fresh, seasonal flowers are always at the ready when those special occasions do pop up. I spend a little less time in the shop, and more time in the garden, with friends & family, or attending to one of the many other things that gets neglected while running a business alone. When I am at the shop, I'm often working to get ready for the next season (and maybe enjoying the air conditioning just a little bit).

The morning sun is shifting and the dahlias are happy with cooler nights.

This week, school is back in session, folks are settling down into a new season of routines, and I'm looking ahead to a full calendar of weddings, baby showers, and more.

When I can, I'll be in the garden, harvesting, doing end of season clean-up, and a few last minute plantings, like the new lilacs I picked up on sale this summer.
